Supporting Materials for Wet-Pour Safety Surfacing

Binder and primer materials are essential components used within PLAYSaFE® wet-pour safety surfacing build-ups. They perform defined technical functions that support correct bonding, adhesion, curing, and long-term performance of wet-pour surfacing installations.

Binder and primer materials are not surfacing systems. They are specified and used only as part of a complete wet-pour construction and must be selected in accordance with substrate type, surfacing layer, and installation conditions.

Role Within a Wet-Pour Build-Up

Within a compliant wet-pour surfacing assembly, binder and primer materials are used to:

  • Bond rubber components into a cohesive and resilient matrix
  • Promote adhesion between surfacing layers and prepared substrates
  • Control curing behaviour under varying environmental conditions
  • Reduce the risk of delamination, voiding, or premature failure

Incorrect selection, substitution, or application of these materials may compromise system performance and safety compliance.

PLAYSaFE Wet-Pour Binder and Primer Materials

Binder Materials

Binder materials are polyurethane-based products used to encapsulate and bind rubber particles within wet-pour surfacing layers.

Function:

  • Binding rubber components into a flexible, load-bearing structure
  • Providing elasticity, tensile strength, and impact resilience
  • Supporting both shock-absorbing base layers and wearing layers

Binder type, mix ratio, and curing behaviour are defined by material characteristics and installation methodology and must be established and controlled by trained installers.

Primer Materials

Primer materials are applied to prepared substrates prior to installation of wet-pour surfacing layers.

Function:

  • Promote adhesion to concrete, asphalt, bituminous, or cementitious substrates
  • Reduce substrate out-gassing and moisture-related failure
  • Stabilise absorbent or problematic substrates prior to surfacing

Primer selection depends on substrate condition, absorbency, and compatibility with the subsequent binder and surfacing layer.

Substrate Compatibility

Binder and primer materials may be used over a range of approved substrates, including:

  • Structural concrete
  • Asphalt and bituminous bases
  • Cementitious screeds
  • Absorbent masonry substrates (where specified)

Substrate preparation, priming method, and over-coating windows must follow documented material instructions and installation procedures.

Specification & Installation

  • Binder and primer materials are specified as components, not standalone products
  • Use is limited to defined roles within PLAYSaFE® wet-pour surfacing systems
  • Application must be carried out by trained and accredited installers
  • Environmental conditions, mix ratios, and curing times are critical to performance
  • Deviation from specification may affect durability, safety, and compliance

Relationship to PLAYSaFE® Wet-Pour Systems

Technical documentation for binder and primer materials is available for reference and specification purposes.

Documents are listed where applicable. Additional safety documentation is available within the dedicated Safety Data Sheets section of Technical Resources.

Supported wet-pour surfacing categories:

  • SBR Shockpad Systems
  • Coloured Rubber Granules Wearing Layers
  • Coloured Rubber Mulch Wearing Layers
  • Rubber & Stone Composite Systems

They do not constitute independent systems and must not be specified or installed in isolation.
