Base Layer Impact Attenuation

SRB Shockpad System Overview

The PLAYSaFE® SBR Shockpad System is an impact‑attenuating base layer system used within compliant wet‑pour rubber surfacing systems.

Wet‑pour is the installation system — not a product. Impact performance is achieved only through the correct on‑site installation of a complete system, not through individual materials.

The SBR shockpad is never a finished surface and is never specified, installed, or assessed in isolation. It is designed solely to deliver critical fall‑height impact attenuation where required and to support compliance with applicable standards when installed to specification.

How the Shockpad System Is Formed

SBR Shockpad System Construction (Wet-Pour Installation)

The SBR Shockpad System is installed on site using a controlled wet‑pour process comprising:

  • Recycled SBR rubber granules with engineered grading
  • Polyurethane binder formulated for elastic structural performance
  • A defined on‑site wet‑pour installation methodology

Materials are referenced for technical clarity only. They have no standalone performance value outside the installed system.

Thickness‑Dependent Performance

SBR Shockpad Impact Performance & Fall-Height Design

Impact performance is thickness‑dependent and is engineered on a project‑specific basis.

PLAYSaFE impact performance data is derived from laboratory testing of complete wet‑pour systems under controlled conditions. Individual site applications are not tested. Tested system configurations form the basis from which project specifications are developed.

Indicative system thickness ranges include:

  • 25–40 mm – low‑impact play areas
  • 45–70 mm – standard playground equipment
  • 75 mm+ – higher fall‑height structures

Final system thickness is determined by:

  • Required critical fall height (CFH)
  • Applicable standards
  • Equipment configuration
  • Substrate condition

When a tested system configuration is correctly specified and installed in accordance with PLAYSaFE requirements, the installed surface delivers the impact performance demonstrated during laboratory testing.

Foundation Requirements for Performance

Substrate Requirements for SBR Shockpad Performance

Correct substrate preparation is critical to shockpad performance and longevity.

Suitable substrates include:

  • Structurally sound, level, and fully cured concrete
  • Correctly compacted and drained asphalt
  • Engineered granular bases (e.g. compacted G5/G7 or equivalent), designed and constructed to PLAYSaFE® specifications
  • Other engineered base constructions approved by PLAYSaFE®

Poor substrate preparation undermines system performance expectations, regardless of material quality.

Accreditation and Quality Assurance

Certified Installation of the SBR Shockpad System

Correct installation is non‑negotiable for impact performance and compliance.

The SBR Shockpad System is designed and specified to be installed by:

  • Licensed and accredited PLAYSaFE® installers
  • Installers trained in correct mixing ratios, compaction, thickness control, and curing procedures

Installer training and accreditation protect:

  • Impact attenuation performance
  • Long‑term durability
  • Compliance with applicable standards

Improper installation is the primary cause of shockpad system failure.

Compliance & Specification Control

Compliance with SANS 51177 and EN 1177 is determined through laboratory testing of complete wet-pour systems installed to defined configurations.

Material components, including the SBR shockpad, do not carry independent compliance claims. Performance cannot be inferred from material type, thickness, or partial system installation.

PLAYSaFE® controls system specification and design intent to ensure that installed surfaces align with tested performance parameters and applicable standards.
