Wet-Pour Pedestrian & Landscape Surfacing Wearing Layer

The PLAYSaFE® Rubber & Stone System is a wet-pour surfacing system designed to provide a durable finished wearing layer within a non-safety surfacing build-up for pedestrian, landscape, and public-realm environments.

Installed in situ over a correctly designed structural base, the system forms a seamless, slip-resistant surface suitable for golf paths, walkways, civic spaces, and architectural landscape applications.

This system is not designed for playground safety surfacing and is not intended for fall-height or impact-attenuation use.

Wear Layer for Wet-Pour Pedestrian Surfacing

Rubber & Stone System Overview

The Rubber & Stone System consists of rubber material blended with natural stone aggregates and combined with a polyurethane binder, installed in situ as a seamless wearing layer.

The system is designed to:

  • Form a continuous, joint-free pedestrian surface
  • Accommodate defined and controlled surface thicknesses
  • Integrate with surrounding hardscape, kerbs, and landscape features
  • Provide a durable, slip-resistant, and permeable finished surface

This system must be specified and assessed as a pedestrian or landscape surfacing solution and must not be treated as a playground safety surface or impact-attenuating system.

System Role

Finished Surface Within a Pedestrian Surfacing Build-Up

Within a Rubber & Stone surfacing build-up:

  • The base structure provides load distribution and stability
  • The Rubber & Stone layer provides the finished wearing surface

The wearing layer contributes to surface durability, slip resistance, permeability, and visual definition.
Overall performance depends on correct base design, specification, and installation.

The Rubber & Stone layer does not provide impact attenuation and must not be relied on for safety-critical fall protection.

Typical Applications

Pedestrian, Landscape, and Public-Realm Environments

The Rubber & Stone System is suitable for environments where a seamless, durable pedestrian surface is required, including:

  • Golf cart paths and walkways
  • Pedestrian circulation routes
  • Civic and public-realm spaces
  • Commercial courtyards and plazas
  • Resorts, estates, and hospitality environments
  • Landscape architecture and urban design projects
  • Transition and perimeter zones adjacent to playgrounds (non-play areas only)

This system is intended for circulation, access, and surface continuity, not active play or safety-critical zones.

Design & Visual Definition

Surface Texture and Spatial Legibility

Once installed, the Rubber & Stone surface provides a visually legible pedestrian finish that supports spatial organisation within outdoor environments.

The system enables:

  • Clear definition of walkways and circulation routes
  • Visual integration with natural and architectural landscapes
  • Consistent surface appearance across large or complex sites
  • Seamless transitions between hardscape and landscaped areas

Design decisions should prioritise function, durability, drainage, and long-term maintenance over decorative complexity.

Installation & System Integrity

Execution-Critical Performance

As a site-installed wet-pour system, performance is highly sensitive to installation execution.

System outcomes are influenced by:

  • Base condition and preparation
  • Accuracy of material proportions
  • Consistency of applied layer thickness
  • Environmental conditions during installation
  • Installer skill and workmanship

To protect long-term performance, PLAYSaFE® Rubber & Stone systems are designed and specified to be installed by licensed and accredited PLAYSaFE® installers.

Compliance & Specification Control

The Rubber & Stone System is not assessed against playground safety standards, including SANS 51177 or EN 1177, as it does not serve a fall-protection function.

Performance must be evaluated under pedestrian, landscape, or public-realm surfacing criteria, based on:

  • Intended use
  • Traffic type and load
  • Base construction
  • Environmental exposure

Surface materials, thicknesses, and finishes must not be misrepresented as safety-compliant or impact-attenuating.
